Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau commissioned the gardens, envisioning a space of beauty and elegance. The Pegasus statue itself was created in 1661 by Caspar Gras and was moved to its current location in 1913 after having graced several other squares in Salzburg.Mirabell Gardens, first opened to the public in 1854 by Emperor Franz Joseph, have been redesigned several times throughout history. The gardens offer a visual alignment towards the Cathedral and Fortress, incorporating it into the historic townscape. The Pegasus Fountain gained worldwide fame as a location in the movie 'The Sound of Music'. Today, the fountain continues to captivate visitors with its ornate design and tranquil atmosphere.
