Discover Austria's Neusiedlersee Nature Reserve: a haven for birdwatchers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

4.7

Neusiedlersee Nature Reserve, a protected area since 1977 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, presents a unique landscape shaped by the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature over millennia. The park, recognized by the IUCN, spans 97 square kilometers and is part of the cross-border Fertő-Hanság National Park with Hungary. The reserve's diverse habitats include the expansive Lake Neusiedl, Europe's westernmost steppe lake, along with reed beds, salt ponds, and meadows. These environments host a remarkable array of species, drawing those interested in birdwatching, hiking and serene landscapes. Over 300 bird species, including migratory birds, find refuge here, making it a crucial stopover point. Birdwatching platforms strategically placed throughout the park offer excellent vantage points. Visitors can explore the park through well-marked hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes, that provide views of the lake and surrounding landscapes. Cyclists can enjoy scenic routes along the lakeshore. Guided tours and educational programs enhance the experience, offering insights into the park's ecological significance and conservation efforts. The nearby town of Rust, known for its wine cellars and historic architecture, provides a cultural complement to the natural attractions. The Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park was founded in 1993, with conservation efforts dating back decades earlier. The park's unique landscape is a result of both natural conditions and human activity over eight millennia.
