    Discover more about Golden Roof

Located in the heart of Innsbruck's Old Town, the Golden Roof is more than just a pretty façade; it's a window into the city's imperial past. Constructed around 1500 by Emperor Maximilian I, the Golden Roof served as a viewing platform for the emperor and his court to observe tournaments, festivals, and other public events in the square below. The roof glitters with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles, which aren't made of pure gold. These tiles were meticulously crafted by hand, giving the roof its iconic shimmering appearance. The oriel is further decorated with intricate reliefs and frescoes. The reliefs depict scenes from Maximilian's life, including his marriages to Maria of Burgundy and Bianca Maria Sforza, as well as other personalities of the court. For a time, the building fell into disrepair and was used as an administrative building and even a barracks. It wasn't until the rise of tourism in the 19th century that the Golden Roof was rediscovered and restored to its former glory. Today, visitors can explore the Golden Roof Museum located within the building to learn more about Emperor Maximilian I and the history of the landmark. The museum showcases artifacts, interactive exhibits, and detailed explanations of Maximilian's legacy.
