Getting There

  • Walking

    The most common final approach is hiking. From the Hochzirl train station, follow the well-marked trail (Alpenverein route 213) towards Solsteinhaus. The route passes through Pleiner, Solenalm, and crosses the Oberbach stream. The hike is approximately 3 hours, with a steep ascent in the final section. Ensure you have appropriate hiking boots and plenty of water.

  • Public Transport

    From Innsbruck, take the S6 train to Hochzirl station. The train ride is approximately 20 minutes. From there, follow the hiking directions to Solsteinhaus. A single train fare from Innsbruck to Hochzirl costs approximately €4-6. Alternatively, take a train to Gießenbach and hike to Solsteinhaus via the Eppzirler Scharte. This route is more challenging and takes around 5 hours.

The Solsteinhaus, an Austrian Alpine Club hut, sits on the Erlsattel ridge between the Nordkette and Erlspitze groups in the Karwendel Alps. Since opening in 1914, and renovated in 2007, it has provided a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding mountains. The hut is a popular destination for both multi-day climbers and day-trippers. Surrounded by alpine meadows, the Solsteinhaus offers panoramic views and access to various activities. A climbing wall and 'flying fox' provide additional entertainment. Inside, guests can enjoy hearty Tyrolean cuisine and modern facilities, including a seminar room. The hut sleeps 85 people in rooms and dormitories. The Solsteinhaus is a key point on long-distance hiking trails like the Karwendel High Trail and the Eagle Walk. Popular routes include ascents from Hochzirl, Scharnitz, and Gießenbach, each offering unique scenery. The hut is typically open from late May to mid-October, depending on weather conditions.
