Getting There

  • Cable Car & Walking

    To reach the Spannagel Cave, start at the Hintertux Glacier valley station. Take the Gletscherbus 1 & 2 cable cars to the Tuxer Fernerhaus station. A round-trip ticket costs approximately €36 for adults for ascent & descent to Tuxer Fernerhaus. From the Tuxer Fernerhaus, it's a 10-minute downhill walk to the Spannagelhaus, where the cave entrance is located. Be prepared for snow and ice year-round, so wear appropriate footwear.

  • Public Transport

    To reach Spannagelhöhle using public transport, take a train to Mayrhofen. From Mayrhofen, catch the Zillertal bus (Line 4104) to Hintertux. Get off at the 'Hintertux' stop. From there, walk to the Hintertux Glacier valley station and proceed as described in the 'Cable Car & Walking' guidance. Bus fare will be a few euros.

  • Car

    If driving, head towards the village of Tux. Once in Tux, follow signs for Hintertux. The Spannagelhöhle is located at Hintertux 779, 6294 Tux. Free parking is available between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm at the Hintertux Glacier valley station. From the parking area, proceed to the Gletscherbahn cable cars to reach the cave entrance.

The Spannagel Cave, or Spannagelhöhle in German, is a mesmerizing natural wonder nestled in the Zillertal Alps near Hintertux, Tyrol, Austria. As the largest rock cave in the Central Alps, it extends for approximately 12.5 kilometers, with about 500 meters accessible to the public via guided tours.
