Getting There

  • Walking

    If you are starting from the Old Town (Altstadt) area of Salzburg, head towards the Salzach River. Walk towards the Makartsteg bridge and cross the river. Once you reach the other side, continue straight until you reach the foot of the Mönchsberg hill. Follow the signs for the Hohensalzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg). The walk will take approximately 20 minutes. As you ascend, you will see the fortress clearly ahead.

  • Funicular

    From the Old Town (Altstadt), you can also take the funicular railway to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Head to the Festungsbahn station located near the Kapitelplatz. The funicular runs frequently and will take you directly to the fortress in about 5 minutes. Once you arrive, you will be at the entrance of the Festungsmuseum.

  • Public Transport

    Although the fortress is best accessed by walking or the funicular, if you prefer public transport, you can take bus line 25 from the central bus station (Zentrale Busstation) towards 'Hohensalzburg'. Get off at the 'Festung Hohensalzburg' stop. From there, it's a short walk to the entrance of the museum. Note that the bus will take about 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic.
