Walking
If you are starting from the Mirabell Palace, exit the palace grounds and head towards Mirabellplatz. From there, walk straight along the Rainerstraße until you reach the Salzach River. Cross the bridge (Makartsteg) over the river, enjoying the views of the fortress. Once on the other side, follow the path along the river until you reach the Old Town (Altstadt) area.
