Getting There

  • Walking

    From Ursprungalm, follow the well-marked trail (No. 771) towards Giglachseen. The hike ascends fairly steeply at the beginning and end, with flatter sections in between. Upon reaching Preuneggsattel, you'll get your first view of the Giglachkar cirque. Continue along the left side of the lakes to Ignaz-Mattis-Hütte. The hike takes approximately 1.5 hours. Note that a toll road leads to Ursprungalm; a hiking bus is also available.

    Take the Planai bus from Schladming or Rohrmoos to Obertal (bus stop "Eschachalm"). From there, hike towards Hopfriesen. Follow the historic miners' route #776 towards Giglachseen. A 5-minute detour will take you to the Nickel Museum. Continue for approximately 2.5 hours to reach Ignaz-Mattis-Hütte. A single bus fare from Schladming to Obertal costs around €5-€8.
