Getting There

Driving

From Schladming, follow the B320 Ennstal Bundesstrasse to the Ruperting exit. Then follow signs for Steirischer Bodensee. Alternatively, from Haus im Ennstal, follow signs to Gössenberg and then Steirischer Bodensee. Both routes lead to a 4.5km well-maintained toll road (open May-October). The toll is €4.20 per person and €1.90 per child. The Schladming-Dachstein Summer Card includes free access. Continue to the large parking area near the Seewigtal Stüberl restaurant. Parking is free. From the parking lot, it's an easy 15-minute walk on a flat path to the lake.
Public Transport

During the summer months (late May to mid-October), a hiking bus (Planai Bus) operates from Schladming (Planet Planai bus stop) via Haus im Ennstal to the Steirischer Bodensee parking lot. The bus ride is free with the Schladming-Dachstein Summer Card, which also covers the toll road fee. Without the Summer Card, a KlimaTicket Steiermark or Österreich may cover the bus fare (excluding the toll). From the parking lot, it's an easy 15-minute walk on a flat path to the lake. Check the Planaibus website for the current schedule.

The Steirischer Bodensee, also known as the Styrian Lake Constance, is a picturesque jewel nestled at 1,143 meters above sea level in the Seewigtal valley. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Schladminger Tauern mountains, including the Hochwildstelle and Höchstein, this pristine lake offers a breathtaking alpine experience. The area is often called the "Valley of Plunging Waters" due to the presence of several lakes connected by waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, from leisurely walks around the lake to more challenging hikes up to the Hans-Wödl-Hütte and the Hüttensee, or even summiting the Hochwildstelle or Höchstein mountains. For a more relaxed experience, rowboats are available for rent, allowing visitors to soak in the serene atmosphere and stunning views. Swimming is not permitted in the lake to protect its delicate ecosystem. The Steirischer Bodensee is also a starting point for various hikes of varying difficulty. A popular option is the easy circular trail around the lake, which takes about an hour. More adventurous hikers can venture to the Steirischer Bodensee Waterfall or embark on the 3-Seen-Tour, which includes the Hüttensee and Obersee. In winter, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, offering opportunities for snowshoeing, ice stock tournaments, and romantic torchlight hikes. The lake is easily accessible via well-maintained toll roads from Gössenberg or Petersberg. The surrounding area also boasts several restaurants and huts where visitors can enjoy local cuisine, including freshly caught trout. The Steirischer Bodensee is more than just a beautiful lake; it's a place where visitors can connect with nature, experience local culture, and create lasting memories.
