The railway ascends 459 meters from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag, traversing a landscape once considered impassable for rail transport. The construction included 14 tunnels, 16 viaducts, and over 100 stone arch bridges.The Semmering Railway quickly became a vital transportation artery, facilitating trade and travel between Vienna and Trieste. Its success spurred the development of similar mountain railways around the world.
