Hauptplatz der Stadt Graz
The Majestic Hauptplatz: Heart of Graz
Discover Graz's hidden gem: a charming elephant sculpture commemorating the city's first encounter with a live elephant in 1629, nestled in the historic Franciscan quarter.
Nestled in the Franciscan quarter of Graz, Austria, 'Der kleine Elefant' (The Little Elephant) is a small, often-overlooked sculpture with a rich history. This charming elephant figure commemorates the first time the people of Graz saw a live elephant in 1629, brought to the city by a traveling circus. The sculpture marks the location of a former inn, also named 'Der kleine Elefant,' which was established around 1850 as a secondary location of the 'Zum schwarzen Elephant' (The Black Elephant) inn, which hosted the circus. Today, the sculpture remains a beloved landmark, a reminder of a time when the arrival of an elephant was a sensational event. Located on the corner of Neue Welt 1, it's easily accessible and offers a glimpse into Graz's unique past, making it a worthwhile stop for those exploring the city's historic streets and cultural treasures. The area around the Kleine Elefant offers a variety of culinary experiences, with several restaurants and cafes nearby.
