Discover more about Riegersburg Castle

Riegersburg Castle, or Burg Riegersburg in German, is an imposing medieval fortress located in the Styria region of Austria. Perched on a 482-meter-high volcanic hilltop, this historic castle is a prominent landmark in the area and offers visitors a glimpse into the past. The impressive basalt crag on which the castle was built was populated already 6000 years ago. With its extensive fortifications, this largest Baroque castle in Styria, was rightly known as the strongest fortress in the Occident. The castle's history dates back to 1122 when a knight built a small keep on the site. Over the centuries, it was expanded and modified by various owners, most notably by Baroness Katharina Elisabeth von Wechsler in the 17th century. She transformed it into one of the largest and strongest castles in the country, surrounded by 3 kilometers of walls, five gates, and two trenches, containing 108 rooms. The castle was never taken. In 1822, the Princely House of Liechtenstein acquired Riegersburg Castle and saved it from ruin. Today, Riegersburg Castle is a popular tourist destination, offering a variety of attractions. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved fortifications, towers, and courtyards. The castle houses several museums, including the Castle Museum, the Witch Museum, and the Weapons Museum. These museums showcase regional history, art, and culture. A falconry show offers breathtaking air shows featuring impressive birds of prey. For those seeking adventure, there's a climbing and adventure park. The castle tavern provides culinary treats with beautiful views.
