Discover more about Bernstein Castle

Rising above the town of Bernstein, Bernstein Castle is a testament to centuries of Austrian history. The castle's origins trace back to the 12th century, with stone walls erected to protect the local population. Over the centuries, it has been besieged, conquered, and rebuilt, each chapter adding to its rich narrative. Strategically positioned at the highest elevation in Burgenland, the castle offered views across the Hungarian plains and southern Styria. The castle withstood sieges by the Turks in the 16th century and the army of Stephen Bocskay in 1604. In the 17th century, the defensive structures were transformed into a Renaissance garden, now the oldest of its kind in Burgenland. The Renaissance hall, adorned with stucco work, remains the heart of the castle. The Almásy family purchased the castle in 1892, and it remains in their possession. László Almásy, the desert explorer and aviator whose life inspired 'The English Patient,' was one of the castle's most famous residents. Since 1921, the family has run the castle as a hotel. Guests can stay in one of the nine restored rooms and suites, furnished with antiques. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, fortifications, castle garden, chapel, and Renaissance ballroom. Guided tours are available from May to early October, Wednesday through Sunday. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and exploring.
