Haus des Meeres: Vienna's Aqua Terra Zoo

The Haus des Meeres (House of the Sea) is a distinctive Vienna landmark, blending aquatic and terrestrial wildlife within a repurposed WWII flak tower. Originally built as an anti-aircraft tower between 1942 and 1944, the imposing structure now houses over 10,000 animals from around the globe. Opened in 1957, the Haus des Meeres has expanded into a zoological experience. The 11 floors feature diverse habitats and exhibits. Visitors can walk through a replica of the Atlantic Ocean in a transparent tunnel, observe sharks and sea turtles, and explore a tropical rainforest with exotic birds and monkeys. The crocodile park offers a glimpse into the world of reptiles, while terrariums showcase snakes, lizards, and insects. Highlights include the 360-degree shark tank, the Atlantic Tunnel, and the Tropical House. The tower's unique architecture provides a backdrop for the exhibits, with panoramic city views from the upper floors. The Haus des Meeres also features exhibits on marine conservation and the flak tower's history, including the "Remembering Inside" exhibition. The Haus des Meeres is a private, non-profit organization that receives limited financial support from the city. Admission fees and revenue from the restaurant, shop, and events cover all expenses.
