Discover more about Kitzlochklamm Gorge

Kitzlochklamm Gorge, located in Taxenbach, Salzburgerland, is one of the most beautiful and impressive gorges in the Austrian Alps. Over thousands of years, the Rauriser Ache river has carved through the limestone slate, creating a dramatic landscape of towering cliffs, idyllic bays, and a thundering waterfall. The gorge's history is rich and fascinating. Its name comes from the young goats ('Kitz' in Austrian) that sought shelter from the summer sun in its cool depths. In the 16th century, miners dug the 'Ritzstollen' (Ritz Tunnel) in search of gold. Though their efforts were unsuccessful, the tunnel remains as a testament to the area's mining history. The gorge was first opened to the public in 1833 and further expanded in 1877, becoming a popular destination for those seeking natural beauty. Today, visitors can explore the gorge via well-maintained paths, bridges, and tunnels. The highlight is the Kitzlochklamm Waterfall, a stunning cascade of water that plunges down the rock face. The gorge also features a hermitage, offering a moment of reflection amidst the grandeur of nature. For thrill-seekers, there are via ferratas (climbing routes) that offer a unique perspective of the gorge from above. The Kitzlochklamm is a constantly changing experience. During the day, the sun's rays dance between mossy stones in the glistening water dust like little elves. In the evenings, the gorge is transformed by atmospheric lighting, creating a mystical atmosphere.
