Discover more about Bernstein Castle

Rising majestically above the town of Bernstein, Austria, Bernstein Castle has origins tracing back to the 12th century. Initially erected to safeguard the local population, the castle has been besieged, conquered, and rebuilt, each event adding to its rich history. Its strategic position offered sweeping views across the Hungarian plains and southern Styria. Over the centuries, the castle has seen many transformations. In the 16th century, it withstood sieges by the Turks, and in 1604, by the army of Stephen Bocskay. Later, the defensive structures were converted into a Renaissance garden, considered the oldest of its kind in Burgenland. The stunning Renaissance hall, adorned with intricate stucco work, remains the heart of the castle. Perhaps the castle's most famous resident was László Almásy, the desert explorer and aviator whose life inspired the film 'The English Patient'. His family purchased the castle in 1892, and it remains in their possession, operating as a hotel since 1921. Guests can stay in one of the nine rooms and suites, furnished with original antiques. Visitors can explore the fortifications, castle garden, chapel and Renaissance ballroom. Access to the castle grounds is only possible as a hotel guest or during a tour.
