  • Walking

    From Salzburg's Old Town (Altstadt), cross the Salzach River via the Makartsteg bridge. Walk straight along Makartplatz, passing the Salzburg State Theatre. The Mirabell Gardens entrance will be on your left. The palace is located within the gardens. The walk is approximately 10-15 minutes.

    The bus stop closest to Mirabell Palace is “Mirabellplatz”. It is served by bus lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 14, 21, 22, 25 and A. From Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station), take a bus to Mirabellplatz. The ride takes approximately 4 minutes and costs between $1 and $2. Your festival ticket is valid as a city bus ticket in the core zone. If you are staying in a hotel, B&B, or hostel in the State of Salzburg, you receive a free Salzburg Guest Mobility Card that gives you free access to buses and trains in the entire State.

Mirabell Palace, with its enchanting gardens, stands as an iconic symbol of Salzburg, drawing locals and tourists alike. Constructed in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his beloved Salome Alt, the palace was initially named Altenau Palace. After Wolf Dietrich's death, his successor, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, renamed it Mirabell Palace.In 1721, Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach commissioned a Baroque redesign by Lukas von Hildebrandt, creating the complex seen today. The Marble Hall, once the Prince-Archbishop's ballroom, is particularly noteworthy, having hosted performances by Leopold Mozart and his children. The palace suffered damage in the town fire of 1818, but the Marble Hall and marble staircase survived.The Mirabell Gardens are considered among the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Europe, famed for their role in 'The Sound of Music'. Emperor Franz Joseph opened the gardens to the public in 1854. Key features include the Grand Parterre with its Pegasus Fountain, the Hedge Theatre, and the Dwarf Garden.Today, Mirabell Palace serves as the office of Salzburg's mayor and the municipal council. The Marble Hall continues to host concerts, meetings, award ceremonies, and weddings. The gardens are open daily, offering a vibrant and colorful experience.
