Discover more about Mirabell Palace

Mirabell Palace, with its enchanting gardens, stands as an iconic symbol of Salzburg, drawing locals and tourists alike. Constructed in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his beloved Salome Alt, the palace was initially named Altenau Palace. After Wolf Dietrich's death, his successor, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, renamed it Mirabell Palace. In 1721, Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach commissioned a Baroque redesign by Lukas von Hildebrandt, creating the complex seen today. The Marble Hall, once the Prince-Archbishop's ballroom, is particularly noteworthy, having hosted performances by Leopold Mozart and his children. The palace suffered damage in the town fire of 1818, but the Marble Hall and marble staircase survived. The Mirabell Gardens are considered among the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Europe, famed for their role in 'The Sound of Music'. Emperor Franz Joseph opened the gardens to the public in 1854. Key features include the Grand Parterre with its Pegasus Fountain, the Hedge Theatre, and the Dwarf Garden. Today, Mirabell Palace serves as the office of Salzburg's mayor and the municipal council. The Marble Hall continues to host concerts, meetings, award ceremonies, and weddings. The gardens are open daily, offering a vibrant and colorful experience.
