Discover more about Bummerlhaus

The Bummerlhaus, located on Stadtplatz 32 in Steyr, Upper Austria, is a stunning example of late Gothic architecture. First documented in 1450, its origins trace back to the 13th century. The name 'Bummerlhaus' comes from the townsfolk's nickname for the golden lion emblem of a former inn, which they humorously likened to a 'Bummerl,' or small plump dog. The building features a Vorderhaus (front house) with a decorated facade facing the Stadtplatz, a Hinterhaus (back house), and three courtyards with arcades. Its steep, hipped roof is typical of medieval architecture. The facade includes a projecting stone balcony on the first floor adorned with blind arcades and a rich frieze. Inside, a house chapel on the upper floor features late Gothic windows and an altarpiece, 'Ascension of Christ' by Martin Johann Schmidt. The first floor of the Vorderhaus displays elaborately designed wooden ceilings. Over the centuries, the Bummerlhaus has been owned by merchants trading in iron, steel, and Venetian goods. Today, it houses a branch of a bank.
