Public Transport

To reach the Angel Fountain using public transport, take the U4 metro line to the Schönbrunn station. From the station, it's approximately a 400-meter walk to the Schönbrunn Palace gardens. Follow the signs within the gardens to locate the Angel Fountain. A single metro ticket costs €2.40.

Walking

If you are already in the vicinity of Schönbrunn Palace, walking to the Angel Fountain is a pleasant option. Enter the palace grounds through the main gate and follow the paths leading towards the central gardens. The fountain is located within the gardens and is easily accessible on foot. Walking from the city center will take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Taxi

A taxi or ride-sharing service can take you directly to the Schönbrunn Palace entrance. From there, it is a short walk to the Angel Fountain. From Vienna's city center (Stephansplatz), a taxi ride to Schönbrunn Palace costs approximately €14-€17. Taxi fares from Ibis Hotel Wien Hauptbahnhof to Schönbrunn Palace are around €10.

Parking

If arriving by car, parking is available near Schönbrunn Palace. The parking area in front of the palace charges €4.50 per hour. Be aware that parking can be limited, especially during peak season. Consider using a Park and Ride garage near a U-Bahn line for cheaper parking options. There are also short-term parking spaces open Monday through Friday, with a two-hour maximum stay.

Overview

The Angel Fountain, or Engelsbrunnen in German, graces the Schönbrunn Palace gardens as one of the park's original sculptural elements from around 1777. The fountain presents a picturesque scene: two cherubic figures playfully perched upon a whale, from which water gently trickles into a large, rose-colored basin mottled with white.Originally, the fountain was framed by green trellis-work, complete with a grand portal and alcoves housing seats. This trellis was later replaced with iron fencing in the early 19th century. The basin itself has an interesting history, having been moved from the Renaissance palace of Neugebäude before being replaced with a replica in the mid-1990s for conservation purposes. The original basin is now preserved in the palace.While wandering through Schönbrunn's gardens, the Angel Fountain provides a peaceful interlude, embodying the artistic and historical richness of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
