Discover more about Angel Fountain

The Angel Fountain, or Engelsbrunnen in German, graces the Schönbrunn Palace gardens as one of the park's original sculptural elements from around 1777. The fountain presents a picturesque scene: two cherubic figures playfully perched upon a whale, from which water gently trickles into a large, rose-colored basin mottled with white. Originally, the fountain was framed by green trellis-work, complete with a grand portal and alcoves housing seats. This trellis was later replaced with iron fencing in the early 19th century. The basin itself has an interesting history, having been moved from the Renaissance palace of Neugebäude before being replaced with a replica in the mid-1990s for conservation purposes. The original basin is now preserved in the palace. While wandering through Schönbrunn's gardens, the Angel Fountain provides a peaceful interlude, embodying the artistic and historical richness of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
