Steinhofgründe: Vienna's Green Escape

The Steinhofgründe, located in Vienna's Penzing district, is a 42-hectare recreational area offering a tranquil escape from city life. Once part of the Otto Wagner Spital, a psychiatric institution built in the early 20th century, the grounds served as agricultural land for the hospital. In 1981, the Viennese people voted to preserve it as a public space. The park features rolling hills, open meadows, and woodlands. Numerous hiking trails provide opportunities for leisurely strolls with city views. For relaxation, the meadows are ideal for picnics. Families can enjoy a forest playground with swings, climbing frames, and slides. In winter, the Steinhofgründe becomes a sledding destination. One of the highlights is the Otto Wagner Church, or Church of St. Leopold, an Art Nouveau masterpiece with a golden dome. Designed by Otto Wagner, it's an example of early 20th-century architecture. Access may be restricted due to its location on the Klinik Penzing grounds; checking accessibility beforehand is recommended. The Steinhofgründe also holds historical significance. During World War II, part of the Otto Wagner Spital was a Nazi medical facility, and a memorial commemorates the victims of these crimes. The foundations of a medium-wave transmitter, built by the American army in the early 1950s, can also be found. Several restaurants and wine taverns (Heuriger) near the Steinhofgründe offer Viennese cuisine and local wines. Many Heuriger only accept cash.
