Discover more about Wien Museum Hermesvilla

The Hermesvilla, located within the Lainzer Tiergarten, offers a glimpse into the lives of Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Emperor Franz Joseph. Built between 1882 and 1886 by Carl von Hasenauer, it was Emperor Franz Joseph's attempt to entice his wife, who frequently traveled, to spend more time in Vienna. He hoped the secluded palace would be a 'Palace of Dreams' for Sisi. The villa is named after the statue of Hermes in the garden. The lavishly furnished building showcases late-Romantic villa construction and was designed by prominent artists of the time, including Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch. Inside, visitors can explore the museum, which features original furniture and personal items of the imperial couple. Highlights include Empress Elisabeth's bedroom, featuring a state bed from the time of Maria Theresa, and her gymnasium. The ground floor hosts an exhibition on the history of the house and its occupants. A restaurant, Café Hermes, is also located in the villa. The Lainzer Tiergarten itself is a large wildlife preserve with a rich history, dating back to 1561 when it was established as a hunting ground. Today, visitors can explore the extensive grounds and observe wildlife such as wild boar, deer and mouflons.
