Nestled near Bad Vöslau in Lower Austria, the Merkenstein Ruins offer a glimpse into the region's medieval past. In 1683, Ottoman forces destroyed the castle, leaving behind the ruins visitors can explore today.Wander through the remnants of stone walls and foundations, imagining life within this fortified structure. A Turkish fountain marks the location of a former game park.Don't miss the Merkenstein Cave at the foot of the castle rock. Accessible only on guided tours, the 72-meter-long cave has revealed evidence of human habitation dating back 12,000 years. Archaeological finds include artifacts from the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age, as well as remains of Ice Age animals. The cave also served as a refuge during the Turkish wars, with a protective wall dating back to 1529.
