Myra Waterfalls: A Natural Spectacle in Lower Austria

The Myra Waterfalls (Myrafälle) are a captivating natural attraction located near Muggendorf in Lower Austria, approximately an hour's drive from Vienna. The falls cascade down a total height of 125 meters (410 feet), originating from the Myrabach stream, which is fed by the Myralucke, a legendary spring at the foot of the Unterberg mountain. This spring is sourced from an underground lake, adding to the mystique of the area.The ravine, through which the Myrabach flows, is about 600 meters (2,000 ft) long and is protected as a natural monument. The subsoil of the gorge is limestone, and the water tumbles down in multiple cascades, creating a picturesque landscape. The longest single drop is about 5 meters (16 feet).Visitors can explore the falls via a well-maintained hiking trail that incorporates wooden bridges, stairs, and viewing platforms. The Austrian Tourist Club originally built the trail in 1885. The loop trail takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete, offering various vantage points to view the falls and the surrounding forested area. Along the trail, there are also stations providing information about the local flora and fauna.The Myra Waterfalls have a rich history, having been visited by Habsburg royalty, including Emperor Francis II and Empress Maria Theresa in 1801. In 1912, a small pumped-storage power station was built at the falls, operating until the mid-1970s. Today, the falls are a popular destination for families, with amenities such as a playground, water playground, and raft ride on the Myra tarn.
