Discover more about Steinhofgründe

Steinhofgründe, located in Vienna's 14th district, is a sprawling 42-hectare park that provides a peaceful escape from the city. Once agricultural land for the Otto Wagner Spital, a psychiatric institution built in the early 20th century, the area was preserved as a public recreational space in 1981 thanks to a vote by the Viennese people. Today, it stands as a testament to Vienna's commitment to green spaces. The park features rolling hills, open meadows, and dense woodlands. Numerous hiking trails wind through the area, offering stunning views of Vienna. For those seeking relaxation, the meadows are ideal for picnics and sunbathing. Families can enjoy a large forest playground with various play equipment. In winter, the Steinhofgründe transform into a popular sledding destination. One of the highlights is the Otto Wagner Church, also known as the Church of St. Leopold, an Art Nouveau masterpiece with a golden dome. Built between 1904 and 1907, the church is a significant cultural landmark. Designed by Otto Wagner, the church was built on the grounds of the mental hospital for patients. The interior boasts altars, tabernacles and glass mosaic windows by Koloman Moser. The Steinhofgründe also hold historical significance. During World War II, part of the Otto Wagner Spital was used as a Nazi medical facility, and a memorial commemorates the victims of these crimes. The foundations of a former medium-wave transmitter, built by the American army in the early 1950s, can also be found in the park. Several restaurants and wine taverns (Heuriger) are located near the Steinhofgründe, offering traditional Viennese cuisine and local wines.
