Discover more about Theresienwarte

Perched on the Hühnerberg (also known as Richtberg) near Baden bei Wien, the Theresienwarte is more than just an observation tower; it's a landmark steeped in history and offering unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape. From its vantage point on the southeastern edge of the Vienna Woods, visitors are treated to a sweeping panorama encompassing the city of Baden, the expansive southern Vienna Basin, and the rolling hills of the Wienerwald itself. The tower's location on the Hühnerberg adds a layer of historical intrigue. The hill was once the site of Lower Austria's highest gallows, used until 1788, earning it the name Richtberg, or Gallows Hill. Legend has it that Franz von Haag, a Bohemian rebel and leader of a band of robbers, was hanged there in 1466. The original Theresienwarte was erected in 1884, thanks to the generosity of Theresia Göschl, a local benefactor who lent her name to the landmark. This first tower, a 16-meter-high wooden structure, underwent renovations in 1912 and 1980. However, by the early 2010s, extensive wood damage rendered the aging tower unsafe, leading to its demolition in the autumn of 2014. Determined to preserve this beloved landmark, the local council approved the construction of a new tower in March 2015. The new Theresienwarte was inaugurated in March 2016. The modern structure retains the charm of its predecessor while incorporating contemporary design elements and sustainable materials. The new tower stands 18.48 meters tall, slightly higher than the original, and is clad in wooden slats. The viewing platform, situated at a height of 17.28 meters, offers an unobstructed 360-degree view. From here, visitors can admire the rooftops of Baden, the distant Schneeberg mountain, and the verdant expanse of the Vienna Woods.
