    Discover more about Schubert's house

Schubert's Birthplace, or Schubert Geburtshaus, is a museum in Vienna dedicated to the life and work of the composer Franz Schubert. It is located in the building where he was born on January 31, 1797. The house, then called Zum roten Krebsen ("The Red Crab"), was the apartment of Schubert's parents, Franz Schubert, a schoolmaster, and his wife Maria, a cook. The family lived here until 1801 before moving to a larger house nearby. The building also housed the school run by Schubert's father. The top floor of the building is now a museum that documents Schubert's life, musical development, and circle of friends. Exhibits include portraits, letters, personal belongings, and even a pair of spectacles worn by Schubert. Visitors can see the kitchen where Schubert was born and explore rooms filled with artwork and Schubert artifacts. Schubert was a prolific composer, creating a wide range of works, including symphonies, operas, piano music and choral works. He is best known for his lieder, chamber music, and their beautiful harmonies and emotional depth.
