The Schönbrunn Maze is easily accessible via Vienna's efficient public transport system. Take the U4 metro line to the Schönbrunn station. From the station, it's approximately a 400-meter walk to the Schönbrunn Palace gardens. Follow the signs to the palace and then to the maze, which is located on the south side of the main building, near the Neptune Fountain. Alternatively, take tram lines 10 or 60, or bus line 10A to the Schloss Schönbrunn stop, which is near the palace's main entrance. From there, walk through the gardens to the maze. A single ticket for public transport within Vienna costs €2.40.

  • Walking

From the Schönbrunn Palace main entrance, walk south towards the gardens. Continue towards the Neptune Fountain. The entrance to the Schönbrunn Maze will be on your right, just before you reach the fountain and close to the zoo. This is a pleasant walk through the palace grounds, allowing you to take in the surrounding scenery. There are no costs associated with walking to the maze within the gardens.

  • Driving

If driving, follow signs to Schönbrunn Palace (Schönbrunner Schloßstrasse 47). Parking is available in the vicinity, but can be limited, especially during peak season. Paid parking is available at Schloßpark Parking (approximately €4.50 per hour). From the parking area, follow signs to the Maze within the Schönbrunn Palace gardens. Consider using a Park-and-Ride garage outside the city center and taking public transport for a less stressful arrival.

Discover more about Maze

The Schönbrunn Maze, found within the extensive Schönbrunn Palace Gardens, provides a lighthearted contrast to the palace's imperial grandeur. Originally established around 1720 as a recreational area for the Habsburg royal family, the maze was gradually abandoned and eventually removed in 1892. It was reconstructed in 1999, using historical designs, and now covers 1,715 square meters. The maze is made up of neatly trimmed hedges and mainly straight paths, making it easy to navigate. At the center, a raised viewing platform allows visitors to observe others finding their way through the labyrinth. The surrounding area includes the Labyrinth and Labyrinthikon playground, offering games, puzzles, and climbing structures for additional entertainment. The maze integrates historical amusement with interactive elements, such as zodiac signs hidden throughout. These features add a playful dimension to the garden, making it a popular attraction within the Schönbrunn Palace grounds. The maze is open seasonally, typically from April to early November, and requires a combined ticket for the Schönbrunn Exclusive Gardens. This ticket also grants access to the Privy Garden, Orangery Garden, and Gloriette viewing terrace, providing a comprehensive exploration of the palace gardens.Accessibility is a key consideration, with ramps and lifts available in all exhibition areas. However, the viewing platform at the maze's center is accessible only by stairs.
