Discover more about Bennoplatz

Bennoplatz, located in Vienna's 8th district, Josefstadt, is a tranquil square with a rich history. Named in 1862 after Benno Pointner, it was previously known as Magazinplatz. The square was parcelled out between 1802 and 1810, following the development of Breitenfeld which began in 1801. Bennoplatz is designed as a quadrangle with closed corners and intersecting streets in the middle, a layout characteristic of the Biedermeier era. While Albertplatz was designated as the main square of the Breitenfeld municipality, Bennoplatz was originally intended to house the Breitenfeld Church. However, construction was delayed from the founding of the church building association in 1835 until the 1890s. The church was eventually built between 1893 and 1898 at Uhlplatz, as Bennoplatz proved too small due to population growth. Today, Bennoplatz offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. Visitors can enjoy the green space and relax in this historic square. Notable buildings surround the square, including Number 2 (Bennogasse 6), built in 1817 and adapted in 1853, featuring a Merkur relief above the portal. Number 4, demolished in the late 1960s, now features a relief by Franz Barwig the Younger (1969) on the new building at Florianigasse 69, depicting farmers, tradesmen, and merchants, commemorating Abbot Benno Pointner's work.
