The Ankeruhr, or Anchor Clock, is more than just a timepiece; it's a captivating landmark that embodies Vienna's rich history and artistic spirit. Located in the Hoher Markt, one of Vienna's oldest squares, this impressive Art Nouveau clock was created by painter and sculptor Franz von Matsch and constructed between 1911 and 1914. It was commissioned by the Anker Insurance Company (now Helvetia) as a unique addition to their headquarters.The clock serves as a bridge between two parts of the Ankerhof buildings, spanning the alley below. Its design incorporates twelve historical figures or groups representing different eras in Austrian history. These figures, which include Marcus Aurelius, Charlemagne, Empress Maria Theresa, and others, move across the clock's face each hour, accompanied by music corresponding to their period. The full spectacle occurs at noon when all twelve figures parade with accompanying music.The clock's Art Nouveau style is evident in its elegant lines and ornamental details. Flanking the clock are figures of Adam and Eve, angels and devils, and a sun disk, creating a symbolic representation of life and death. The Ankeruhr has become a cherished symbol of Vienna, attracting tourists and locals alike.
