The Liebenberg Monument, situated on the Universitätsring at the Mölker Bastei, commemorates Johann Andreas von Liebenberg, the mayor of Vienna from 1680 to 1683. Liebenberg is celebrated for his leadership during the Second Ottoman Siege of Vienna in 1683, where he oversaw the city's defenses and organized its citizens. His efforts were crucial in maintaining the morale and determination of the Viennese people throughout the siege. Sadly, Liebenberg passed away just two days before the arrival of the relief army that ultimately defeated the Ottomans. The monument itself is a late historicist design, featuring a 9-meter high stone obelisk on a stepped base. A bronze lion rests on the steps, its paw atop an Ottoman shield, symbolizing victory over the invaders. Two bronze putti hold a gilded portrait medallion of Liebenberg, and the monument is crowned with a gilded statue of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory. The monument was commissioned on March 17, 1887, designed by architect Franz von Neumann, with sculptures by Johann Silbernagel, and unveiled on September 12, 1890. It was damaged during World War II but restored by December 1949.Located in the Innere Stadt (Inner City), the monument is near the University of Vienna, the Pasqualatihaus (where Beethoven lived), and other historical landmarks. The Mölker Bastei itself is part of Vienna's old fortifications, offering panoramic views of the city.
