Discover more about Rathausplatz

Rathausplatz is more than just a square; it's a dynamic public space that serves as a focal point for Vienna's cultural, social, and political activities. Originally part of the Josefstädter Glacis, an open defensive area, it later became a military parade ground in the 19th century. Following the construction of the Ringstraße, the area was developed into the Rathausplatz we know today. The square officially received its name in 1919. The square is framed by the impressive Rathaus (City Hall) and the Rathauspark. The Rathaus, a neo-Gothic building completed in 1883, is the seat of Vienna's city government. Its iconic tower, topped by the Rathausmann statue, dominates the skyline. The Rathauspark, designed by Rudolph Siebeck, provides a green space with monuments dedicated to Austrian historical figures. Rathausplatz hosts numerous events throughout the year. In winter, the square transforms into a Christmas wonderland with the Christkindlmarkt. From mid-January to early March, Vienna Ice World takes over the square, turning it into a large ice rink. In the summer, the Rathaus Film Festival screens musical performances and films. Other events include the Steiermark Frühling, a festival celebrating the Styria province, and the Vienna Bike Festival. The square also serves as a venue for political demonstrations and civic events.
