Discover more about Reichsbrücke

The Reichsbrücke, or Imperial Bridge, is a vital structure in Vienna, linking Mexikoplatz in Leopoldstadt with Donauinsel in Donaustadt across the Danube. Carrying around 50,000 vehicles daily, it incorporates six traffic lanes, U-Bahn tracks, footpaths, cycle paths, and utility tunnels. Originally named Kronprinz-Rudolph-Brücke after Crown Prince Rudolf, the first bridge on this site was constructed from 1872 to 1876, even before the Danube was regulated in Vienna. This original bridge featured an iron girder truss design supported by five pillars. After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was renamed Reichsbrücke in 1919. In the 1930s, to combat unemployment, a modern suspension bridge was planned to replace the aging Reichsbrücke. The technical plans were developed by architects Siegfried Theiß and Hans Jaksch, with Clemens Holzmeister providing artistic oversight. Construction occurred between 1934 and 1937. Remarkably, the pillars of the old bridge were extended downstream, and the entire structure was shifted 26 meters in under seven hours. Opened on October 10, 1937, the new bridge featured four traffic lanes, two tram lines, and pedestrian walkways. During World War II, the Reichsbrücke was the only Danube bridge in Vienna to escape significant damage. Tragedy struck on August 1, 1976, when the bridge collapsed. The cause was determined to be a structural failure in the bearings. An international competition was launched to design a replacement, and construction of the current Reichsbrücke began in 1978, opening on November 8, 1980. The Vienna U-Bahn was routed across the Reichsbrücke on September 3, 1982. A comprehensive overhaul in 2003 included renovations to the bridge's periphery, lighting upgrades, and widened pedestrian and bicycle paths. The Reichsbrücke offers stunning views, including the Vienna International Centre (UNO-City) and the Danube Island.
