Discover more about Belvedere Palace

The Belvedere Palace, located in Vienna, is a magnificent Baroque complex built in the early 18th century as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, it comprises two palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere, connected by elaborately designed gardens. Today, it stands as a prominent cultural landmark, housing one of Austria's most valuable art collections. The Upper Belvedere is home to the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings, including his iconic work, 'The Kiss'. The palace also showcases Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present day, with works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. The redesigned permanent exhibition, 'Picture this! The Belvedere Collection from Cranach to EXPORT', extends throughout the palace, highlighting Austrian art in the context of international artists. The Lower Belvedere, once the residence of Prince Eugene, reflects the lavish splendor of its owner with its Groteskensaal (Hall of the Grotesque), Marble Gallery, and Golden Room. It hosts special exhibitions and, in the former stables, displays medieval art. The Baroque gardens, designed by Dominique Girard, feature symmetrical pathways, ornate sculptures, and a reflecting pool that mirrors the palace's façade. Visitors can explore the architectural highlights of the palace, including the Sala Terrena, the grand staircase, and the Carlone Hall. The Belvedere offers a blend of history and contemporary art, making it a must-see destination in Vienna.
