Discover more about Lower Belvedere

The Lower Belvedere, constructed between 1712 and 1716, was designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt as the summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. This opulent palace served as a counterpoint to the Upper Belvedere, which was primarily used for representation. The Lower Belvedere allowed Prince Eugene to showcase his wealth, power, and refined taste. The palace is renowned for its exquisite Baroque architecture and lavish interiors. Highlights include the Marble Hall, which originally served as a ceremonial reception area adorned with war trophies and a ceiling fresco by Martino Altomonte. The Grotesque Hall features unique wall paintings, while the Golden Room shimmers with liturgical, regal, and artistic touches added by Maria Theresa. The Marble Gallery was designed to display sculptures and features stucco war trophies. Today, the Lower Belvedere hosts a variety of art exhibitions, with a focus on contemporary art and temporary shows. The Orangery, once a conservatory for citrus trees, has been transformed into a modern exhibition space. Visitors can also explore medieval art in the palace stables. The Belvedere gardens, a highlight of Baroque landscape architecture, feature a reflecting pool that mirrors the palace's façade. The Lower Belvedere offers a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere compared to the Upper Belvedere.
