Discover more about Burgruine Hohenbregenz

The Burgruine Hohenbregenz, situated on the 598-meter-high Gebhardsberg, offers a captivating blend of history and panoramic vistas. Constructed around 1100 by the Counts of Bregenz, the castle occupied a strategic location overlooking Lake Constance. Over the centuries, it passed through various noble hands, including the Counts of Pfullendorf and the Habsburgs, serving as a seat of Austrian bailiffs. In the 17th century, the castle was expanded into a fortress, but its military role was short-lived. In 1647, during the Thirty Years' War, Swedish troops captured Hohenbregenz and subsequently destroyed it by detonating five mines. Today, only the ring wall and parts of the palace remain, testaments to its former grandeur. Within the castle ruins stands the pilgrimage church of St. Gebhard, built in 1723. This church, dedicated to St. Gebhard, whose arm relic was donated to the church in 1821, lends its name to the mountain and offers a serene space for reflection. The castle courtyard and rooms now host a restaurant, and the 10th-century water tower houses a unique wine cellar. The site is a popular venue for weddings and celebrations. A visit to Burgruine Hohenbregenz provides not only a history lesson but also a chance to connect with the natural beauty of the region.
