Discover more about Stift Dürnstein

Stift Dürnstein, majestically situated on the Danube River in the Wachau Valley, is a captivating blend of history, art, and spirituality. Founded in 1410 by Otto von Maissau, who invited Augustinian Canons from Bohemia, the monastery has evolved through centuries, reaching its zenith in the 18th century when it was transformed into a Baroque masterpiece. The abbey's most recognizable feature is its stunning blue-and-white church tower, designed by Matthias Steinl, which has become an iconic symbol of the Wachau region. The vibrant colors and elegant design of the tower reflect the theological program of the time, adding deeper religious meaning to the structure. The abbey church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, showcases intricate details and an opulent design that exemplifies the high Baroque style. Inside, visitors can admire the fully rotatable tabernacle of the high altar, adorned with 44 scenes from the life of Jesus, and the abbey organ, which dates back to 1724 and remains in its original condition. Beyond its architectural splendor, Stift Dürnstein has a rich and eventful history. In 1788, Emperor Joseph II dissolved the monastery, bringing monastic life in the town to an end. The parish and buildings were then transferred to the Augustinian Canons at Herzogenburg, who continue to administer them to this day. Today, Stift Dürnstein serves as a venue for cultural events, exhibitions, and guided tours, allowing visitors to explore its heritage. The "Discovery of the Precious" exhibition invites visitors to delve into the spiritual and artistic concepts behind the monastery's design.
