The Vogelbergsteig is an alpine trail that begins in Dürnstein, in the heart of the Wachau Valley, and ascends to the Vogelberg. The name 'Vogelberg' refers to the steep, bush-covered flanks of the mountain, which provide nesting sites for birds. The trail starts in the wooded valley west of Dürnstein's old town and climbs the Biratal wall in serpentines.As you ascend, the path narrows and becomes rocky, with fixed cables for security in some sections. Along the way, several lookout points offer views of Dürnstein Castle, the town itself, the Danube, and the surrounding Wachau Valley. The trail continues along the Vogelberg's flank, passing rock towers before descending into the forest. A detour to the Kanzel viewpoint provides panoramic views of the Danube River bend and the Dunkelsteiner Wald.The Vogelbergsteig is part of a network of hiking trails in the Wachau region, including the Wachau World Heritage Trail. Hikers can combine the Vogelbergsteig with other trails, such as the Dürnstein to Krems Vineyard Walk, for a longer excursion. The nearby Fesslhütte, a mountain hut built about 100 years ago, offers refreshments and local cuisine. The Starhembergwarte, a lookout tower near the Fesslhütte, provides additional views.The trail is generally open year-round, except during snow or ice.
