Discover more about Burgruine Dobra

Burgruine Dobra, located near Franzen in Lower Austria, is a fascinating medieval castle ruin with a history stretching back to the 12th century. The name 'Dobra' itself is believed to have Slavic origins, meaning 'forest' or 'oak forest'. Perched on a peninsula jutting into the Dobra reservoir (also known as Kampsee Dobra), the castle's strategic location controlled the Kamp River valley. Originally the seat of the Lords of Dobra, the castle passed through various hands over the centuries, including the Kuenring family and the Liechtensteins. It even served as a stronghold for a robber knight in the mid-15th century. In the 16th century, the Gothic fortress was transformed into a fortified Renaissance residence. Besieged by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War, it successfully resisted capture. However, its fortunes declined in the early 18th century when the owner moved to Wetzlas Castle, leading to Dobra's abandonment. Locals scavenged stone from the castle to build houses and expand the church in Franzen. In recent years, the 'Pölla Aktiv' association has been working to restore the ruins. Today, Burgruine Dobra serves as a popular destination, offering visitors a glimpse into the Middle Ages. The castle features a restored dungeon and a keep that offers panoramic views of the Dobra reservoir and the surrounding wooded landscape. While the keep is not always open, the key can be obtained for those wishing to climb it. A modern event space has been added, creating a unique juxtaposition of ancient ruins and contemporary architecture. Burgruine Dobra hosts events, weddings, and cultural workshops, offering an unforgettable experience for all.
