Discover more about Schloss Weitra

Schloss Weitra, perched atop a granite plateau in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, is a captivating Renaissance castle with a rich and storied past. Originally built as a medieval fortress between 1201 and 1208 by Hadmar II von Kuenring, the castle and the town of Weitra served as a vital military, administrative, and economic hub. In 1581, Emperor Rudolf II entrusted the estate to Wolf Rumpf, who transformed the ancient fortress into a stunning Renaissance castle between 1590 and 1606, following plans by imperial architect Pietro Ferrabosco. Since 1607, Schloss Weitra has been owned by the Fürstenberg family, who continue to preserve its legacy. In 1994, the castle underwent extensive renovations for the Lower Austrian State Exhibition, opening its doors to the public. Today, visitors can explore the castle's museum, which showcases the history of the Kuenring and Fürstenberg families, as well as local handicrafts and economic development. A highlight of Schloss Weitra is the observation tower, offering panoramic views of Weitra's medieval city walls and the surrounding Waldviertel landscape.
