Discover more about Steinpyramide

Located on the Steinberg mountain near Ober Neustift, between Zwettl and Groß Gerungs, the Steinpyramide is a fascinating and enigmatic structure. Known locally as the "Stoanahaufn" (pile of stones), this stepped pyramid stands approximately 6.8 meters tall with a base diameter of 16.5 meters. It consists of four roughly circular levels, constructed from loosely stacked fieldstones. The pyramid's origins and purpose are unknown, fueling speculation and intrigue. Some theories suggest it was a Celtic cult site, while others propose it served as a medieval signal station. Another theory links it to a Freemason lodge established in Rosenau Castle in 1747. The structure is unique in Central Europe, adding to its allure. In 2000, the Austrian Federal Monuments Office placed the Steinpyramide under protection. Geomantic lines radiate from the pyramid, contributing to the location's reputation as a place of special energy. Although a portion of the pyramid has shifted, two elevated viewing platforms offer visitors a good view of the monument. The site is accessible via a short walk from a nearby parking lot.
