Discover more about Burg Heidenreichstein

Burg Heidenreichstein, located northeast of Gmünd in Lower Austria, stands as Austria's largest and most beautiful medieval water castle. Its history dates back to around 1160 when the central keep was constructed. The castle's design incorporates a natural rock head, enhanced by moats fed by the Hauswehrteich and Romaubach streams, creating a partial water barrier. Access is granted via two drawbridges leading to a Renaissance gate. The castle has four wings, three corner towers, and a central keep with walls up to four meters thick, reflecting various architectural styles. Burg Heidenreichstein has never been conquered or significantly damaged, allowing it to retain its original medieval character. Originally founded by Heidenreich von Gars-Eggenburg, the castle later came under the control of the Palffy family in 1679 for nearly three centuries. In 1947, it was bequeathed to Rudolf van der Straten-Ponthoz, whose daughter Josephine married Christian Count Kinsky. Today, Burg Heidenreichstein remains the Kinsky family's permanent residence and administrative center. Visitors can explore the castle's interiors, including the three-story residential wing with spiral staircases and arcades showcasing Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque influences. Guided tours offer an immersive experience into the castle's history and architecture, with the option to explore a secret corridor within the keep. The outer courtyard hosts theater performances during the summer months. Heidenreichstein itself is a charming town with a rich history, granted its town charter in 1932. Visitors can explore the historic square, admire the Trinity Column, and visit the Moorland and Peat Bog Museum.
