Discover more about Schallaburg Castle

Schallaburg Castle, located in the village of Schallaburg near the Wachau Valley in Lower Austria, is a captivating blend of architectural styles spanning centuries. Its origins trace back to the 11th century as a fortified structure. The castle experienced its golden age around 500 years ago when Hans Wilhelm von Losenstein transformed it into a magnificent Renaissance castle, drawing inspiration from Italian architecture. From the 13th to the 15th centuries, the lords of Zelking owned the castle. In 1456, it came into the possession of the Losenstein family, who held it until 1614. Hans Wilhelm von Losenstein spearheaded its Renaissance makeover in the 16th century. He also rebuilt the Loosdorf church into a Renaissance Lutheran church and established a Lutheran grammar school. In 1614, George von Stubenberg acquired the castle. From the 17th to the 20th centuries, the castle changed hands numerous times, remaining private property until 1945. In 1945, the castle was seized by the Russians, and in 1955, it became the property of the Republic of Austria. Today, Schallaburg stands as an imposing work of art spanning generations. The castle's architecture combines a Romanesque residential castle and a Gothic chapel, patterned in the Italian Renaissance style. Its two-storied arcaded court features terracotta decorations depicting mythological figures, gods, masks, and animals. Visitors can explore the castle's museum, which hosts changing exhibitions, providing insights into various historical and cultural themes. The current exhibition, running from April 12 to November 2, 2025, is titled "Träume... träumen" (Dreaming... dreams). The castle grounds also feature a Renaissance garden, offering a tranquil space with roses, ornamental trees, bushes, and herbs. Children will enjoy the two large 'smoke-spewing dragons' at the gate entrance, which serve as slides. Schallaburg hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including the Arts and Artisan Days, the Theatre Festival, and a Christmas Market. Guided tours are available in English, providing deeper insights into the castle's history and architecture.
