Discover more about Castle Staatz

Castle Staatz, known locally as Burg Staatz, stands on the Staatzer Berg, a distinctive limestone cliff in Lower Austria's Weinviertel. Visible for miles, this landmark offers a blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty. Built in the 11th century as part of the Weinviertel's settlement, the castle served as a crucial defensive structure. Over the centuries, it was held by noble families like the Lords of Staatz and Maissau. Castle Staatz played a role in regional conflicts, including a battle in 1246 where Ulrich III, Duke of Carinthia, was captured and imprisoned within its walls. The castle met its end during the Thirty Years' War in 1645 when Swedish troops sieged and bombarded it, causing a fire. The Swedes demolished the castle during their occupation. Abandoned, it became a quarry for a new residential castle at the mountain's base, which also burned down in 1945. Today, the ruins are open to the public year-round. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy the views. The surrounding area offers hiking trails through the Weinviertel landscape. Guided tours are available on Sundays from May to October, providing insights into the castle's history and the region's geology. The Felsenbühne Staatz, an open-air stage at the cliff's foot, hosts musical performances with the illuminated castle ruins as a backdrop.
