Discover more about Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf

Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf, located in the Weinviertel wine district of Lower Austria, has been owned by the Liechtenstein family since 1440. Originally a Gothic castle, it was transformed around 1600 into a four-winged water chateau by Gundakar of Liechtenstein. Over the centuries, the castle faced destruction and served various purposes, including a Prussian field hospital. Renovated in 2001-2002, it now functions as a cultural and exhibition center. The castle features a museum dedicated to the history of the Liechtenstein family and their connection to the Weinviertel region. The main exhibition chronicles the family's origins, rise to prominence, and ties to South Moravia. Visitors can explore artifacts, documents, and interactive displays. The castle is also known for its princely cellars, which have produced wines for over 600 years. Wine enthusiasts can enjoy guided tours and tastings. In the northern side wing, the local history museum displays 10-million-year-old bones and Neolithic artifacts. The castle hosts events like the Schlossfestival, featuring open-air operettas. A children's playground is available in the former castle moat. The family crypt in Wilfersdorf Church is the final resting place of Prince Gundaker and his family.
