The Brenner Base Tunnel, upon completion (estimated by 2032), will stretch 64 km, becoming the longest underground railway connection globally. It will reduce the journey time between Innsbruck and Fortezza to just 25 minutes. The tunnel's flat, relatively straight track with a gradient of 4‰ - 7‰ will also allow for longer and heavier freight trains.
