Discover more about Eulenwiesen

Eulenwiesen, or Owl Meadows, is a captivating natural attraction nestled in the Stubaital Alps near Schönberg im Stubaital. This unique landscape features a light and airy larch forest, creating a haven for a variety of flowers, including pasqueflowers, trumpet gentians, and arnica. The open meadows are covered in matgrass and dwarf-shrubs, adding to the picturesque scenery. These meadows, known as “Larchbergmahder,” originated from fire clearance practices. Farmers in the valley, facing frequent floods, sought new pastureland at higher altitudes, around 1,700 meters above sea level. While spruces and pines were consumed by the fires, the resilient larches only burned superficially and regrew the following spring. Today, the Eulenwiesen are maintained through diligent care and cultivation by local farmers, who annually mow the meadows by hand using scythes. A hike through Eulenwiesen offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Stubaital and the Serles mountain range. The area is particularly stunning in late autumn when the larch forests transform into a golden spectacle. Several hiking trails cater to different skill levels, making it an accessible destination for families and avid hikers alike. The Gleinserhof, a traditional guesthouse, is nearby, providing a perfect spot to relax and enjoy local delicacies after a walk.
