Reifenstein Castle, known as Castel Tasso in Italian, stands as a testament to medieval history in South Tyrol. Located near Vipiteno (Sterzing), the castle has never been destroyed, making it one of the region's best-preserved fortresses. The castle's history dates back to 1110 when it was a fief of the Lords of Stilves. Over the centuries, it passed through various hands, including the German Order of Knights, who expanded and fortified it. Since 1813, it has been privately owned by the Tyrolean Count family von Thurn und Taxis, who have preserved its medieval condition. Visitors can explore the castle's Gothic interior, which includes the original kitchen, bathhouse, and medieval sleeping bunks. The Green Hall, with its Gothic paintings and woodcarved chapel-door, is a highlight. The castle also features a torture chamber, courtroom, and subterranean dungeon, offering a glimpse into medieval life. Archaeological discoveries near the castle add to its historical significance.
