Annasäule, or St. Anne's Column, is a striking monument located on Maria-Theresien-Straße in the heart of Innsbruck. This elegant red marble column, standing on a square pedestal, was erected in 1706 to celebrate the Tyrolean victory over Bavarian troops during the War of the Spanish Succession. The event occurred on St. Anne's Day, July 26, 1703, hence the column's name. The column was designed by Cristoforo Benedetti, an Italian sculptor, and features several significant statues. At the base, you'll find statues of four saints deeply connected to the region: St. Anne, the mother of Mary; St. George, the patron saint of Tyrol; St. Cassian, patron saint of the Diocese of Bozen-Brixen; and St. Vigilius, patron saint of the Diocese of Trento. Towering above, the column is topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary as the Woman of the Apocalypse, symbolizing protection and triumph. The original statue of Mary was replaced in 1958 for conservation and is now housed in a side chapel of the abbey church of Fiecht.Over the centuries, Annasäule has become more than just a monument to a military victory. It represents the enduring spirit of Innsbruck and its people. Today, it serves as a central gathering point and a reminder of the region's rich history, faith, and traditions. Visitors can admire the Baroque craftsmanship, enjoy the lively atmosphere of Maria-Theresien-Straße, and reflect on the spiritual significance of this iconic landmark.
