Discover more about Coburger Hut

Perched at 1,917 meters (6,289 feet) in the Mieming Range of Tyrol, Austria, the Coburger Hütte is more than just a mountain hut; it's an immersive Alpine experience. Owned by the Coburg Branch of the German Alpine Club, this Category I hut lies a stone's throw from the serene Drachensee (Dragon Lake), named for the legend of a dragon guarding a sunken village. The hut's story began in 1890 with a proposal by alpinist Ferdinand Kilger, brought to life in 1901 by the German Alpine Club's Coburg branch. Over the years, it has evolved, gaining amenities like a water connection, an electrical generator, and even a telephone line by 1908. Post-WWI expansions and modernizations, including a material ropeway in 1962 and a heat and power station in the 2000s, have ensured the hut remains a comfortable and sustainable mountain refuge. Today, the Coburger Hütte welcomes hikers and climbers from June to early October. It offers accommodation for up to 80 guests in mattresses, with additional emergency beds and a winter room available. The hut serves traditional Tyrolean cuisine, with fresh drinking water from its own spring and a sun terrace offering panoramic views. The area around the Coburger Hütte is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Popular activities include hiking to nearby peaks like the Sonnenspitze and Drachenkopf, tackling via ferratas like the Tajakante-Klettersteig, and simply enjoying the stunning scenery of the Drachensee and Seebensee lakes.
