    Discover more about Schloss Hellbrunn

Schloss Hellbrunn, or Hellbrunn Palace, is an early Baroque villa located a few kilometers south of Salzburg. Constructed between 1613 and 1619 by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, it was designed as a place for leisure and entertainment. The name Hellbrunn comes from the German words meaning “clear spring,” referring to the source of water that feeds the palace's famous trick fountains.Unlike other palaces meant for full-time residence, Hellbrunn was intended only as a daytime summer retreat. As such, it notably lacks bedrooms. The palace's architecture, designed by Santino Solari, is a stunning example of Italianate Mannerism. Visitors can explore the palace's rooms, including the Festsaal (ceremonial hall) adorned with allegorical paintings, the Octagon with its scenes of social gatherings, and themed rooms like the Bird Room. The true highlight of Hellbrunn is its Wasserspiele, or trick fountains. Conceived by the playful Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus, these fountains were designed to surprise and amuse guests. Hidden jets of water, operated by the power of water alone, can be found in grottos, sculptures, and even at the stone dining table, where unsuspecting visitors might find themselves soaked. The gardens also feature a mechanical theater, powered by water, depicting scenes from Baroque-era life.Beyond the palace and fountains, the extensive gardens offer a peaceful retreat. Visitors can wander through landscaped parks, natural biotopes, and an English garden added in the 18th century. Children will enjoy the large adventure playground. A glass gazebo on the grounds gained fame as a filming location in the Sound of Music. In winter, the palace courtyard transforms into a festive Advent market.
